Philip Heit Center for Healthy New Albany

Project Overview

In 2012, the City of New Albany, OH set a lofty goal for itself: It would become the healthiest community in the country.  A nonprofit organization, Healthy New Albany, was formed to be the vessel to carry this vision to reality. After engaging in an intensive period of research and consultation with experts in the field of community health promotion, it was determined that a critical step in reaching their goal would be the establishment of a bricks and mortar facility to serve as a “hub” for wellness in the community.  The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center was selected to provide the expertise to design the clinical and programmatic elements of the proposed facility with Integrated Wellness Partners partnering with them to bring its nearly three decades of experience in successfully designing and medically-integrated health and wellness centers with health systems, universities and communities across the country.

As a result of this extraordinary partnership, the $14 million, 55,000 square foot, Philip Heit Center for a Healthy New Albany opened to the public in December of 2014. The Center houses primary care physicians, a sports medicine practice, physical therapists, orthopedics, massage therapy, chiropractors, acupuncture, registered dietitian, laboratory services and imaging, radiologists, a cooking demonstration kitchen, community meeting/education space and the state-of-the-art The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Health & Fitness Center (managed by IWP).

In the short time it has been open, the Heit center has quickly become the locus for promoting health and well-being in the greater New Albany area.  In addition to its approximately 2,000 members, the center is home to a wide array of ongoing health and wellness education curriculum available to the entire community.  Also, working collaboratively with OSU, Healthy New Albany, the New Albany Chamber of Commerce and insurance carriers, the center provides comprehensive worksite wellness services to the New Albany business community.  The facility is also host to a wide variety of formal and informal events, clubs and groups that contribute to the well-being of the community.  From hosting the finish line and post-race activities for the largest walking race in the country to serving as a staging point for the local road biking clubs to simply being a welcoming home for the local Mahjong group, the Heit Center is playing a central role in realizing New Albany’s vision to become the healthiest community in the country.
